County of Ventura
Ventura County Public Defender Steve Lipson will retire on June 16 after 31 years with the county.
Lipson began his tenure with the county as a trial attorney in the public defender's office in September 1986. He defended numerous criminal cases for 20 years, Ventura County Executive Office Mike Powers said in a statement released on Friday. The cases included misdemeanor drunk driving and felony capital murder.
Lipson became the county chief deputy public defender in 2006. Two years later, he was promoted to assistant public defender. Lipson became chief public defender in 2010.
As chief public defender, Lipson worked to increase the number of clients represented by his office, including the mentally ill and those with substance abuse problems, Powers said.
Lipson also worked to reduce jail overcrowding and inmate recidivism.
Powers said his office will start the process of finding a replacement for Lipson soon.
